During the Norman domination, the Arabian style architecture was typical in South Italy and Villa Rufolo in Ravello is a beautiful example of it. This famous Villa was built between the XI and the XIII century and belonged to the Rufolo family, one of the richest family of Ravello.
The villa was mentioned by Giovanni Boccaccio in his Decameron and it is the place where Richard Wagner in 1880 was inspired for the stage design of his opera Parsifal. In 1974 Villa Rufolo became part of public heritage and today it hosts several musical events; it is the seat of the European University Centre for Cultural Heritage and of a Piano High School.
