Built in the early XVII century, the building housing this museum was chosen in 1777 by King Ferdinand I as the perfect home for the immense Farnese collection of ancient artefacts inherited from his grandmother Elisabetta Farnese. Discoveries from Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum were added later, making this one of the world’s best archaeological museums.
